I recently finished ready Living The Savvy Life by Melissa Tostetti and Kevin Gibbons and absolutely loved it.

It's "the savvy woman's guide to smart spending and rich living".

A basic overview of the book is that although we might wish it wasn't so, money affects every aspect of our lives. To be truly financially successful we need to spend less than we make which takes thought and organization.

This sounds simple but we all know it's just not that easy. This book breaks down how to do it in a straight forward and easy to read manner.

The mantra of Living a Savvy Life is to "Save money on the things that aren't as important to you so you can afford to spend money on the things that are important to you".

Mr. H and I love to travel. It's important to us to discover new places and have time away from work and responsobility.

The book suggests nailing down a date that you want to vacation so you can start saving for something tangible.

I often get tired of hearing "I just can't afford that". This book suggests if you really want it you can afford it by saving and eliminating other things from your life.

I cut coupons out of the Sunday paper, I look for sales at the grocery store and check out Living Social every day for deals. All so I can afford the fashion I love and live the life I want by saving on the things that aren't as important to me.

This book will help you get out of debt (if you have any), stay organized and help focus in on where you can be saving so you can afford to spend. Ultimately having that control will make you live a happier and carefree life.

My savvy spending tip is buying meat in bulk at the grocery store (ex. 3lb package of ground beef), separate serving sizes in to freezer ziplocs and freeze until you are ready to use... the extra dollars saved will add up :)

We're in saving mode at the moment, which made us take a hard look at where our $$ has been going. Looking back, we were spending on so much trivial things.

Take a good look at where your money is going; challenge yourself to cut back and the reward will be that much sweeter.

Invest in some nice reusable containers for snacks, lunch water, and coffee/tea, and ONLY USE THEM. No quick pick-ups. Cut your own carrot and celery slices. Making food from scratch at home and drinking water is a huge money-saver. And finding meals, like roasting a chicken, that can last for a week (Roast chicken, cold cuts, chicken salad, chicken soup) for the cost of just the one protein and then veggies saves money, time, and is super-healthy. Getting creative with spices is a cheap way to fancify your food (low cost and low cal!)

Whenever I need something for the house I decide first what qualities I want the item to have. Then I go to the thrift shops. Nine times out of ten I will find exactly what I am looking for at a fraction of the cost.

Whenever purchasing something online I always google promotional codes before checking out to see if I get lucky! For example if shopping at J.Crew I would just google J.Crew promotional coupon and see what pops up. www.retailmenot.com is usually the most reliable and 8 times out of 10 I will end up getting a discount!

When it seems we're only increasing the spending, rather than saving, every little bit helps. We're part of a CSA and get super fresh, local veggies and fruit each week which is healthier and saves us a ton of money- we hardly ever go grocery shopping in the summer. We've also started baking our own bread and we cook every weeknight- healthy and cheap!

One little thing that I think adds up is making my own coffee every morning. A couple dollars every day is a lot in the long run. I also try and make large meals at home on Sundays so I can have leftovers for lunch all week.

I am a mega water drinker...but I want that water to be filtered. For the past few years, I gave up buying a water bottle a day and use a a metal water bottle (you can get them anywhere) and just reuse it all day/everyday!! Also, when I can, I make lunch and bring it to work. It's a big money saver to bring in leftovers, turkey sandwiches etc then spending $6-$8 a day!!!

Living in NYC, it sometimes seems impossible to cut corners on saving money. One way I save money is by not paying for cable or internet access at home. It's one of those super expensive monthly fees that I'd rather spend on my wardrobe. So, basically, if I need internet service, I'll walk to a local coffee shop or use the connection on my phone. And, to me cable is just a guilty pleasure that in the past has often times prevented me from enjoying the beautiful city I live in. So I think in the end it's a win, win.

After living in NYC and just getting by every month . I learned that you can save a lot of money with your food budget by stopping by the store everyday and buying just the items you need for dinner and lunch the next day. You'll find not only can you save money this way but you wont waste as much food.
