Ask a Stylist

A while back I did a post about how I would love to get into styling.

As of today I have my first client - Miss G!

She's a sophisticated working woman. She has a career wardrobe she loves but struggles with what to wear on the weekends. She wants to look casual but not sloppy. Miss G lives up North and wants to spend around $150 to update her weekend look.

Working long distance I wanted to get a feel for who inspires Miss G. Two distinct, yet different women came to her mind - Lauren Conrad and Tory Burch.

To narrow down the style selection I can sum up each woman's look in three words. Lauren: Chic, On-Trend, Classic. Tory: Colorful, Tailored, Risk Taker. As you can see these women are very different yet are both super stylish.

Next I asked Miss G to send me photos of the weekend basics she already owns. Going shopping in your own closet is the first thing to do when you're looking for an update. It's important to know 1. what you already own and 2. what looks good on your body before investing more money.

Miss G's closet consists of these weekend staples: 1. A Denim Shirt - PERFECT for any closet as it goes with just about everything. 2. A Floral Tunic - I like a tunic as it can be tucked into bottoms or worn with leggings. 3. Three pairs of pants: Skinny Jeans, Black Leggings and Boot Cut Jeans. 4. Brown Knee High Boots. 5. Plain shirts (not pictured) - these are a perfect layering tool and can match about any bottom or jacket.

Based off what she already has in her closet and the style she's trying to attain I came up with the following: (I really tried to blend Lauren and Tory's style while staying within a budget)

A Sequin T is a great weekend staple. It can go from day to night and if you choose a neutral color can match just about anything in your closet.

Tory Burch loves a good print! I chose this chevron blouse for Miss G because it will play well with other patterns and is comfortable yet stylish.

A mixed metal necklace (one with both silver and gold) is worth the investment. By having one piece of jewelry that is both metals you can layer in other necklaces and anchor the look.

Wearing a scarf is a great way to change up your look. I really like this one from Gap because it has a trendy neon color paired with a versatile neutral.

I'm a big fan of the blazer. LC rocks one frequently - it gives both a structured look to jeans and dresses down a cocktail dress. Opt for one in a bold color like neon pink or green.

Wearing a skirt on the weekends is a fun and flirty alternative to pants. Pulling inspiration from LC with a flouncy fashion forward High/Low hem and from Tory with a fun print this polka dot skirt is a great way to freshen up your closet.

Miss G mentioned that winter shoes are hard for her to find. I love a low heeled bootie. This tan one will go with almost anything, allows for city walking and is super chic.

There are pieces you invest in (an amazing black leather bag) and then ones that you spend as little as possible on but enjoy the trend. This orange and gold bag is right up Tory Burch's color ally and will send a shock of color thru any outfit.

Nothing says Lauren Conrad more than a tuxedo blazer. It's chic and can pull an outfit together.

You can't wear shorts or skirts in the winter with out tights. Invest in a pair of black, brown and gray and you're golden!

I adore the slippered ballet flat. It's on trend and when done in a fun pattern can make the entire outfit.

There are a few pieces that both Lauren Conrad and Tory Burch could agree on. One is a faux fur vest! This piece is fun, funky and adds depth and luxury to any weekend wardrobe including Miss Gs.

I think it's important for Miss G to play around with pattern. This short sleeve, patterned, tailored blouse will jazz up any closet.

Wedged booties are a classic winter weekend shoe. The wooden heel dresses down the look and we all know black goes with anything.

Stacking inexpensive bracelets is a chic way to add some flare to your wardrobe. This animal print one pairs perfectly with a mixed metal set and any others Miss G might already own.

Shorts in the winter are unexpected and fun. These brown faux leather ones can go from day to night and will always look right.

Check back tomorrow when I pair these new buys with Miss G's current closet to make 8 FAB weekend looks!!

Sunday Steal

Maxi Skirts are very on trend. Designers like Rachel Zoe are creating gorgeous ones for hundreds of dollars. I would die for Rachel's version but it's not currently in the budget.

Lucky for me Old Navy has a fab hot pink Maxi Skirt for $30!

It got great online reviews. I've ordered one for myself (picture it with a white tank and a black leather jacket) and will give y'all an update when it comes in!

Fashion Friday: Lauren Conrad

Next week I'm doing my first styling session with a new client Miss G. I asked her if she could have any celebrities style who would it be. She answered with Tory Burch (LOVE) and Lauren Conrad. (Check back next week for Miss G style session.)

Lauren Conrad? Who wouldn't want LC's style?

She's fresh, cute yet sexy and looks great while both on and off the red carpet. She's written a witty Chick Lit series and has a FABULOUS beauty blog called The Beauty Department giving you "your daily dose of pretty".

Here's a few tips on how to get LC's style.

1. Nude Pumps are your friend!

Wearing nude heels elongates your legs. When you look taller you look skinnier. Take a tip from LC and go nude!

2. You can wear leggings, just do it with style.

In grade school (think the late 80s) my mother told me if I was going to wear leggings I needed a shirt that covered my bottom. It might be over 20 years later but this advice is still true! Leggings look best when paired with a tunic or oversize sweater. I love how LC added flat boots and a scarf for a laid back yet put together look.

3. Topknots are Top Notch

If I had long hair I would always wear in a topknot. Whether you're dressing up or haven't showered for the day, a high bun looks chic, glamorous, and classy.

4. Stripes are a classic.

When shopping for casual, everyday pieces turn to stripes. They are classic and versatile. LC looks styled yet comfortable with her striped dolman blouse and cutoffs.

5. When in doubt shine!

You cannot go wrong with a sparkly dress! LC is great about showing off her best feature - her legs! If you're wearing a mini dress it's best to avoid cleavage - LC's cap sleeves are perfect.

6. Invest in a classic.

A leather jacket is a great investment piece. Throw it over a cocktail dress for date night or pair it with jeans and ballet flats for grocery shopping. Spending money on something you will wear all the time (and that will last) is much wiser than throwing your money away on cheap trendy clothes.

To sum up LC's style - know what works for your body, invest in well made classics, keep casual looks chic and simple and always smile!

Red Carpet: Golden Globes 2012

The best part of award season? THE FASHION!!

I loved the nude trend that showed up this year at The Golden Globes.

Heidi Klum confirmed that simple is also elegant in a low back nude custom Calvin Klein Collection gown (designed by Francisco Costa.) I love how she paired such an uncomplicated dress with a statement necklace of bold turquoise! Charlize Theron captivated with her thigh grazing hem and oh so low neck. Her Dior Haute Couture gown was glamorous, then again what doesn't she look good in?  Kristen Wigg looked sophisticated and chill at the same time in a plunging neckline Bill Blass dress and Fred Leighton jewelry.

Don't know what to wear to a party? Try something that sparkles!

Laura Dern knows you can still look sexy in sleeves - just add some sparkle and jewel tone color! Salma Hayek looked like a Bond Girl wearing this figure flattering Gucci Gown. Nicole Ritchie was beyond glamorous in her Julien Macdonald dress. Her playful yet elegant hair and makeup paired perfectly with the color and cut of her gown.Evan Rachel Wood wowed in this Gucci Stunner. I love the dept in the color palate and the sexy yet sophisticated feel.

A gown that shows handcrafted work and tiny details is always a show-stopper.

Emma Stones embroidered cap sleeves, rich color accents and belt give her Lavin Dress eye catching detail. Dame Helen Mirren defines glamour and sophistication (as always) in this navy Bagley Mischa creation. Sophia Vegara knows how to work her assets - her blue Vera Wang gown is pure sexy yet refined. Claire Danes proves that black and white are always in vogue. The high neckline and large key hole back show that this J. Mendel gown is a true show stopper!

Fashion Friday: Awards Season

With the People's Choice Awards under our belts and The Golden Globes on Sunday, Awards Season has officially begun.

I'm not a huge fan of awards shows but LOVE The Red Carpet.

I can't wait to see all the fashion this Sunday and in anticipation I leave you with one of my favorite Red Carpet Dresses of all time.

Nicole wore this John Galliano for House of Dior to the 1997 Oscars. I remember being 16 years old and thinking this was the most amazing dress I had ever seen. The color against her red hair was striking, the high embroidered necklace chic and unusual, and that thigh high slit added sophisticated sex appeal!

I swear I went out and rented Days of Thunder just to get more of Nicole Kidman after seeing her in this dress. Tom Cruise who?!

Who do you look forward to seeing on The Red Carpet?
